Department of Soil Sciences and Water Resources

College of Agriculture - University of Kirkuk

About the Department

The Department of Soil Sciences was established in 2010. The establishment aimed to supply the labor market with graduates specialized in the study of soil layers utilized by various types of plants, from grasses to forest trees. The department's curriculum includes the study of the genesis and formation of these layers, their classification, physical and chemical properties, and the organisms living in them, as well as their influence by various surrounding environmental factors. The department also studies soil improvement steps. Later, the department was developed to study water resources alongside soil, and the name was updated accordingly.

Master's studies were introduced in the department in 2020, and the department has future plans to introduce doctoral studies after completing the requirements for their establishment. The scientific department participated in the Dutch Nuffic programs on water management and soil improvement. The department's faculty members have active participation in scientific committees and discussions inside and outside the university.

The department has two specialized laboratories where practical studies of all subjects included in the department's curriculum are conducted. Frequent scientific visits are also organized for students to various sites, soils, and irrigation projects to increase students' knowledge.
The department is headed by Dr. Daoud Nouri Mahmoud.

  3. Revitalizing scientific research for sustainable, high-production agriculture capable of international competition.
  4. The department's participation in agricultural and scientific conferences and in evaluating projects.
  5. Making scientific research results available and providing consultations to investors and decision-makers.
  6. Supporting extension channels, community service, and rural community development.

Mission

The department's program contributes to achieving the college's mission, which seeks to discover, disseminate, and apply knowledge to manage natural resources efficiently in order to provide food and sustainable agricultural development while preserving the environment. The department is also interested in preparing qualified cadres to develop agricultural production and serve the community by conducting applied research to find solutions to community problems in the agricultural field, especially in the fields of soil and water resources, in addition to participating in implementing extension programs to transfer knowledge and applied research results and participating with other departments locally, regionally, and internationally to develop education and scientific research.

Objectives

  1. Graduating qualified scientific cadres holding a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences within the specialization of Soil Sciences and Water Resources, as well as advanced scientific cadres holding higher degrees (Master's).
  2. Establishing programs for community service by holding seminars, training, and extension courses in the field of soil and water resources, in cooperation with other government departments related to various agricultural sciences.
  3. Contributing to solving the problems suffered by the agricultural sector, especially within the soil and water axes, through the preparation of research projects implemented by the scientific staff in the department specifically or through research projects for postgraduate students.
  4. Preparing continuous education programs to follow up on graduates of the Soil Sciences and Water Resources Department and develop their technical and scientific skills by holding development courses on the latest sciences in the department's specialization and those wishing to develop their skills in this specialty.
  5. Working on developing the department's curricula in cooperation with corresponding departments in Iraq.
  6. Adopting educational courses that focus on the student's practical skill side to prepare them for the labor market and continue self-learning.
  7. Conducting applied research in the fields of soil fertility, fertilization, irrigation system technologies, soil survey and classification, and its microorganisms.
  8. Maximizing the return from the soil and water unit while focusing on rationalizing water use and preventing soil and water pollution.
  9. Investing in information technology to develop education, research, and community service.
