A master’s thesis at the College of Computer Science and Information Technology, University of Kirkuk, explored the performance analysis of optical switching based on Passive Optical Network (PON) technology.
The thesis, presented by student Farhad Salih Ahmed, aims to design and simulate a "national optical network backbone" connecting Iraq’s governorates—from Mosul in the north to Basra in the south—spanning a distance of 1,100 kilometers. By utilizing Wavelength Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network (WDM-PON) technology, the design eliminates the need for costly optical-to-electrical-to-optical (O-E-O) conversion stations. This framework is intended to serve as a foundation for supporting future digital infrastructure and initiatives such as the "Development Road" project.
