A teacher from the College of Engineering at the University of Kirkuk, Dr. Mariwan Reda Faris, as part of a research team from the University of Sulaymaniyah, the University of Halabja and the American University of Nevada, published a research entitled (Hypothetical failure of the Khassa Chai dam and flood risk analysis for Kirkuk, Iraq).
In the Dutch magazine (Natural Hazards) within Springer publications and classification of Q1 with an impact factor of 3.1, the study included a simulation of a virtual fracture of a 2D dam with a height of 58 meters in Kirkuk, Iraq, using the HEC-RAS 2D 5.0.7 program. This dam (especially Jay) is located 7.4 km north of Kirkuk, and simulations revealed that the flooding of the dam will affect eight major bridges and most of the urban neighborhoods of Kirkuk, and within an hour, the flood waters will reach the city center. The results of this study, in identifying evacuation routes and sites of refuge as well as building appropriate warning systems to reduce the risk of mortality in the event of a failure of this dam.
