The College of Agriculture discussed a master’s thesis on genetic improvement in wheat by determining the genetic action of some quantitative and qualitative traits, by student Tariq Raad Thaer, and under the supervision of the experienced professor Dr. Jassim Muhammad Aziz.
The study aimed to induce genetic variation by conducting semi-crosses between seven genotypes of soft wheat of Egyptian origin and the Al-Fayyad variety adopted in Iraq.
The study concluded that the hybrids Giemiza 9× Giemiza 7 and Giemiza 9 × Fayyad have possessed the desired genes for the largest number of economic traits and these parents have a desirable general federal ability, which gives an indication of the possibility of tracking their isolated generations and selection from the early generations of superior genetic models and the adoption of the method of breeding by lineage and can improve the yield of grain depending on the selection of models superior to the number of spike grains.
