Two lecturers from the College of Agriculture, Prof. Dr. Hussein Dhaher Taher and Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Sabah Bahaaddin, participated as speakers in a professional training course organized by the Agricultural Extension and Training Center in Kirkuk on the use of renewable energy in operating modern irrigation systems and methods of adapting to climate change. The event was attended by staff from the center and affiliated demonstration farms.
The lecturers explained that their presentations focused on introducing participants to the concept and types of renewable energy and its role in sustainable agricultural development, emphasizing the importance of transitioning to clean energy sources to reduce emissions and improve irrigation system efficiency. They also discussed the impact of climate change on agricultural production and the need to adapt through modern technologies, the role of agricultural extension in raising farmers’ awareness about alternative energy use and resource sustainability, the importance of solar energy in powering irrigation systems and reducing production costs, as well as the main components and operating mechanisms of solar energy systems in agricultural environments.
The course also included practical demonstrations and case studies of solar-powered irrigation projects in Iraq, addressing technical and economic challenges in adopting renewable energy systems and ways to overcome them.
