In collaboration with the Kirkuk Palace of Culture and Arts, the College of Media at the University of Kirkuk held a seminar to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, under the theme: "No Impunity: Protecting Journalists is a Responsibility and a Matter of Justice."
The seminar, hosted by the Department of Journalism, addressed the importance of providing legal and professional protection for journalists. It highlighted the challenges and risks they face while performing their journalistic duties, and explored ways to raise public awareness regarding the significance of press freedom and its role in upholding the principles of democracy and human rights.
Furthermore, the seminar emphasized the necessity of addressing violations and crimes committed against journalists, ensuring legal accountability, and preventing perpetrators from evading punishment. Such measures are essential for fostering a safe environment for media work, strengthening the independence of the press, and enabling journalists to fulfill their professional and humanitarian mission.
For his part, the Dean of the College of Media, Professor Dr. Maad Assi Ali, underscored the importance of such seminars in promoting awareness of journalists' rights and fostering a culture that protects the freedom of media work. He noted that the College remains committed to organizing academic and discursive activities that enhance media and legal literacy, strengthen the College’s role in serving society, and embed the principles of professionalism and responsibility within journalism—all while expanding cooperation with cultural and community institutions.
