College of Engineering Organizes a Scientific Field Visit for Fourth-Year Students to the Baghdad Garage Tunnel and Bridge, and the Ikhwan Roundabout Tunnel in Rahimawa

Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Chelang Akram Omar, and as part of the scientific and practical activities that the College of Engineering at the University of Kirkuk is keen to organize to enhance students’ field experience, the Department of Civil Engineering organized a scientific visit for fourth-year students to the Baghdad Garage Tunnel and Overpass, as well as the Ikhwan Roundabout Tunnel in the Rahimawa area.

The visit was supervised by a group of faculty members from the department and aimed to acquaint students with the key stages of implementing major construction projects in the province, introduce them to the modern methods used in the design and construction of tunnels and overpasses, and enhance their understanding of the engineering challenges and technical solutions required in such projects.

During the visit, the engineers in charge of the project provided a detailed explanation covering several key points, including:

The excavation and support mechanisms used in tunnels.

The stages of constructing piles and reinforced concrete spans for overpasses.

Drainage systems and moisture protection inside tunnels.

Engineering inspection procedures and quality control standards applied during construction.

The visit also gave students the opportunity to ask questions and engage in direct discussions with the technical teams on-site, helping them connect theoretical knowledge with practical application and strengthen their engineering analysis skills.

This visit comes as part of a series of scientific activities organized by the Department of Civil Engineering to prepare graduates with strong field experience and an integrated engineering vision that meets labor market needs.
