A teacher from the Department of Petroleum Engineering at the College of Engineering at Kirkuk University publishes a review article with a research team on ammonia decomposition in prestigious international journal, Clarivate.
Dr. Omar Ibrahim Awad, a lecturer in the Department of Petroleum Engineering, published a research entitled “Ammonia Decomposition with the Help of Cold Catalase to Produce Carbon Dioxide-Free Hydrogen: A Review Article” and another research on the effect of the PODE1 additive in ethanol and gasoline in a prestigious international journal within the first quarter of Q1 Scopus and Clarivate. The research is exploring innovative approaches to produce hydrogen (H2) using cold plasma (NTP) and catalase technology, with a focus on ammonia (NH3) as a carbon-free hydrogen carrier.
The research highlights the challenges associated with the costs of storing and distributing hydrogen, suggesting ammonia as a promising solution given its strong international transportation and storage infrastructure. Dr. Awad's work highlights the efficiency of on-site hydrogen production through ammonia decomposition, especially using NTP technology which has shown higher energy efficiency compared to thermal plasma systems.
A key aspect of the study is the combination of NTP with catalase, known as plasma-assisted catalase. This synergistic approach enhances the efficiency of ammonia decomposition, opening the door to CO2-free hydrogen production. The article covers the basics of plasma-assisted ammonia decomposition, including adsorption and removal processes, the effect of NTP on chemical states and the properties of various reagents, providing a comprehensive analysis of the factors affecting plasma-assisted ammonia decomposition. The research also highlights the limited studies that have been done so far on plasma- and catalase-assisted ammonia degradation. The article is a comprehensive summary of the latest plasma- and catalase-assisted ammonia decomposition methodologies for hydrogen production.
