The Geography Department discusses a master’s thesis on urban-rural integration in the city of Kirkuk

In the presence of the Dean of the College of Education for Human Sciences, Professor Dr. Farhad Aziz Mohieddin, the Geography Department discussed on Thursday, February 29, 2024, a master’s thesis titled (Rural-Urban Integration of the City of Kirkuk) in the college hall, The study shed light on the phenomenon of urban integration of the city of Kirkuk as one of the most important factors that contributed to the expansion of the city in terms of area and urbanization. The city of Kirkuk, like other cities in Iraq, witnessed an expansion in terms of area during its stages of growth, contributed by a group of factors, the most prominent of which was the natural increase in the size of the population. And the waves of migration, in addition to the capture operations carried out by the city of villages close to its urban borders, and some of these villages became administratively an urban space, but in reality they carry rural characteristics, whether in the types of buildings, the activities of the residents, and the road network. The study aimed to develop mechanisms and plans to draw a picture of the future of the relationship between the settlements. Rural areas (villages) that joined the city and preserved the rural identity of some villages relatively far from the city. The study concluded that the number of villages that joined the city reached (24) villages, and that this joining process produced a set of positive and negative effects that were reflected on the environment of the city and the countryside together. The study concluded with a set of recommendations and proposals that can be taken into account by decision makers and the possibility of addressing the negative effects. resulting from the city's capture of those villages.
