About the Department

The Department of Art Education is one of the academic departments at the College of Basic Education, University of Kirkuk. It prepares qualified educational cadres to teach Art Education in schools affiliated with the Directorates of Education. The Department of Art Education was established at the College of Basic Education, University of Kirkuk, in 2025. The first departmental council was formed in the academic year 2025–2026, and the department grants a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education.

Leadership and excellence in the field of Art Education to contribute to building a vibrant society locally and regionally. The department strives to develop arts and art education to enhance the aesthetic and cultural awareness of students and the community, to prepare and develop distinguished professional educators both academically and practically to achieve positive change, and to offer outstanding academic and research programs that serve the community and promote sustainable development.

Department Mission

To spread artistic and cultural awareness within society, develop students’ skills in various artistic disciplines, foster creative and intellectual openness toward the Iraqi, Arab, and international communities, and contribute to creating an artistic and cultural reality that aligns with the civilizational vision of the new Iraq.

Department Objectives

  • Educate individuals to live a refined aesthetic life within a developing society, instilling constructive social values and curricula in students practicing artistic work and participating in both classroom and extracurricular activities.
  • Identify and nurture students’ artistic talents.
  • Strengthen students’ self-identity and provide opportunities to express their emotions and feelings, helping shape their personalities.
  • Develop the ability for careful observation, precise vision, critical thinking, and purposeful artistic appreciation.
  • Acquire progressive skills suitable for students’ ages and levels, connecting them to their environment and promoting artistic culture through the heritage of our folk traditions.
  • Respect manual work and those who engage in it.
  • Assist students in using selected local materials in their artistic creations.
  • Cultivate artistic taste and sensitivity among students.
  • Foster a spirit of cooperation and teamwork through group activities.
  • Highlight individuality in artistic expression, positively influencing personality development, as art is a process of innovation and creativity, not mere imitation.

Specific Objectives of the Department of Art Education

  • Prepare qualified art education teachers capable of teaching the subject.
  • Prepare researchers specialized in art education, engaging in research and experimentation in art and aesthetics across all stages of general and higher education.
  • Prepare specialists capable of designing training programs within national education initiatives (in-service teacher training).
  • Prepare specialists able to implement and deliver programs in aesthetic education and its role in community development through various media and communication channels.
