The Dean of the College of Arts at the University of Kirkuk, Prof. Dr. Omer Najm Al-Deen Enja, participated on Saturday (January 18, 2025) in the international scientific seminar titled "Rising from the Ruins... Strategic Visions and Rehabilitation Programs for Female Addicts."
In his opening speech, the Dean stated that this issue has become part of the national strategies for combating drug addiction by the Iraqi government. The government has entered into international agreements and developed a national strategy, obligating provinces and relevant authorities to implement educational and awareness strategies to reduce this phenomenon.
He also mentioned that the Ministry of Higher Education had taken steps regarding the admission of graduate students in Iraqi universities, stating that accepted graduate students can only begin their studies after undergoing preliminary health tests in health departments. He emphasized that no other countries or educational institutions have implemented such a procedure.
The Dean highlighted the opening of specialized centers in health departments for this issue, considering that some students may be unaware of their condition if they are affected by addiction, whether through alcohol or cigarettes, which may contain substances that cause addiction in any form.
He stressed the importance of early detection of this issue, which is a crucial step in eliminating the disease. He warned that the negative impact is not limited to the addict alone but extends to the surrounding environment, potentially hindering social integration if the person is discovered to be affected. He called for adopting scientific methods to treat addicts and emphasized the importance of spreading awareness to combat and limit addiction.
