Under the patronage of the President of the University of Kirkuk, Prof. Dr. Omran Jamal Hassan, and supervised by the Dean of the College of Arts, Prof. Dr. Omar Najm Al-Deen Enja, College of Arts, through its Continuing Education Division, in cooperation with the Department of Arabic Language and the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit, held a scientific symposium on Monday, October 7, 2024, entitled "The Phenomenon of Suicide and Its Impact on the Family and Society: Its Motives, Causes, and Prevention Methods."
The organization of the symposium comes as part of the College of Arts' efforts to combat the phenomenon of suicide by educating students about its dangers and raising awareness on how to address and prevent it. Suicide may occur for various reasons, including depression, sudden changes in behavior, substance abuse, guilt, and loneliness, among others.
During the symposium, Head of the Arabic Language Department, Assist. Prof. Dr. Koystan Najm Al-Din Inja, delivered a speech, emphasizing that suicide is a tragic reaction to stressful life situations. There is no single reason behind a person’s attempt to commit suicide, but there are factors that increase the risk, with depression being the primary risk factor.
She stressed the importance of studying these causes and addressing them from all angles, whether psychological or social, to eliminate the thoughts that lead some individuals in our society toward suicide.
In his speech at the symposium, the lecturer from the Arabic Language Department, Assist. Lecturer Sanker Saber Abdul Rahman, highlighted that taking one's life is not a solution to the problems instigated by the devil and the evil whispers he implants in people's minds, which is why suicide is forbidden by all means.
He added that suicide was never and will never be a remedy. It is forbidden in all its forms and is not a cure for crises and problems, but rather a disease that causes downfall and deprivation from entering paradise.
