Several professors of the Faculty of Science at the University of Kirkuk participated in the International Geodiversity Day, organized by UNESCO. The theme of this year’s Geodiversity Day was “Conserving the past – Sustaining the future,” International Geodiversity Day: An opportunity to review the possibilities of investment in geological tourism". The event was held in the Al-Zwaya area in Salah Al-Din Governorate, hosted by the Department of Applied Earth Sciences at the Faculty of Science, Tikrit University.
Prof. Dr. Soran Nihad Sadiq, Head of the Department of Applied Geology, Prof. Dr. Omar Sabah Al-Tamimi, Director of Scientific Affairs, Missions and Cultural Relations at the University Presidency, and Assistant Professor Dr. Omid Ahmed Al-Tukmji, Member of the Ministerial Committee for Geoparks, participated in the event.
The day was designed to inspire people with lessons from the basics and elements of geological diversity and the role of archaeological sites as a key element in geological diversity, and of geology in building contemporary life. The event focused on establishing the first geopark in Iraq and promoting investment in the field of geological tourism.
