A teacher at the College of Science / University of Kirkuk examined a master's thesis

Based on the principle of scientific cooperation and exchange between the faculties of the University of Kirkuk, Assistant Professor Dr. Mahdi Hadi Mohsen, a teacher in the Department of Applied Geology / College of Science, participated as a member of the committee to discuss a master's thesis. The thesis was "The use of geospatial techniques in drought monitoring in northern Iraq" at the College of Agriculture - University of Kirkuk.

The teacher explained that the thesis prepared by the student (Rahman Mustafa) aimed to study the indicators derived from remote and climatic sensing data to monitor and classify drought in northeastern Iraq. It also analyzes the severity, duration and frequency of drought in the areas under study using the standard rain index (SPI).

The study found that the amount of annual rainfall in the southern and southwestern parts of the study area is lower than that of the north and northeast. The results of the SPI6 index showed that the region faced many droughts, especially in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2017, 2021, and 2022. The Aridity Index (AI) also indicated that the southern and southwestern parts of the region are arid and semi-arid areas because of low rainfall and high temperatures.

The thesis has received valuable feedbacks from the examiners to enrich it and support its information. After extensive scientific discussion and the student's defense of his thesis, the examining committee accepted the thesis and granted the student a master's degree in agricultural sciences.
