In the College of Science/Chemistry Department, a master’s thesis entitled “Preparation and diagnosis of some heterocyclic compounds and study of their effectiveness against bacteria” by the student Ahmed Tahseen Bakr Jumah and under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Saad Salem Jassim took place.
The study aimed to prepare a number of alpha-beta unsaturated carbonyl compounds containing active groups to use them in addition reactions to prepare other derivatives. As well as the preparation and diagnosis of five-cyclic heterocyclic compounds such as pyrozoline and isoxazoline, and six-cyclic compounds such as thiazine-2-amine and oxazine-2-amine, and studying the biological effectiveness of the prepared compounds on two types of bacteria (Gram positive and gram negative).
The results of spectroscopic analysis showed that the prepared compounds had undergone an appropriate purification process by the recrystallization method. By following the reaction progress of the compounds prepared using the TLC technique, it was revealed that there was a clear change in the time period when comparing the compounds on the basis of the substituted groups, in addition to the difference in the biological effectiveness of these substitutes, as some compounds showed high effectiveness against the bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) compared to their effectiveness against E. coli bacteria. The use of microwave technology is suitable and inexpensive and saves a lot of time and effort.
At the conclusion of his study, the researcher recommended preparing new cyclic compounds derived from alpha-beta-gamma-delta unsaturated carbonyl compounds and measuring their effectiveness on different types of bacteria and fungi
