About the Department

The Applied Geology Department was established in the academic year 2005-2006 as one of the departments of the College of Science / University of Kirkuk, and the first batch graduated in the academic year (2008-2009). Currently, the department offers a Master's program in four specializations: Structural and Engineering Geology, Environmental Geology, Petrology and Mineralogy, as well as Hydrogeology. The mission of the Applied Geology Department combines education and the growth of knowledge through scientific research and community service. To this end, the department has a strong, modern, and professional academic program. It includes a core curriculum of basic subjects alongside specialized subjects focusing on applied geology. To prepare students, these study materials increase awareness of the educational process and the understanding of geological issues and their solutions. Faculty members are required to stay up-to-date in their fields of specialization, attempt to find solutions to future social demands from geologists, and ensure the quality of graduate students' research. Faculty members actively participate in knowledge development through scientific research to ensure the educational purpose is met. The graduate studies program is a fundamental component of this research endeavor, and every possible effort is made to create an environment that encourages and supports the advancement of research for faculty and students. The results of these research efforts are frequently presented through academic lectures and publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
