The Dean of the College of Arts Emphasizes the Importance of Turning the Eradication of Illiteracy from a Goal into a Reality

Professor Dr. Omer Najm Al-Deen Enja, Dean of the College of Arts at the University of Kirkuk, on the International Literacy Day, which is observed on September 8 each year, emphasized the importance of turning the complete eradication of illiteracy from a goal into a tangible reality.

The Dean pointed out that eliminating illiteracy is a great victory for humanity, and that the ability to read and write is a basic human right for all. It opens the door to the exercise of other human rights, greater freedoms, and engagement in global citizenship. He stressed the need to benefit from Iraq’s historical contributions in this regard, as it is the nation that taught humanity how to write.

He also highlighted the need to educate people about literacy to enrich their knowledge, acquire broader skills, and develop values with greater impact, as well as more inclusive attitudes and behaviors. This is essential to fostering a culture of lasting peace characterized by respect for equality, non-discrimination, rule of law, solidarity, justice, diversity, and tolerance.

He called on policymakers, specialists, and the general public in Iraq to remember the critical importance of literacy in creating more sustainable, just, peaceful societies that are equipped with reading and writing skills.
