About the Environmental Research Unit

The Environmental Research Unit was established in accordance with the ministerial order in 2005, based on the principle of concern for the environment by activating the mechanism of joint cooperation with all relevant departments in the province of Kirkuk in order to serve the Iraqi citizen in providing the university with environmental projects that are concerned with identifying the most important environmental problems facing the country in various diverse fields.

Thanks to the availability of a large and diverse number of advanced and modern research equipment, the Environmental Research Unit is one of the research units specialized in graduate students and researchers, and it can cooperate with various Iraqi universities because of the unit's capabilities in this field. Despite the economic conditions that the country has gone through, the unit has played and continues to play a leading role in various environmental activities through the establishment of environmental seminars and various environmental activities and events to spread environmental awareness, in addition to cooperation with the departments of the governorate, such as the departments of environment, health, water resources, agriculture, veterinary services, the North Oil Company and the North Gas Company... etc. from the relevant departments.

Since its formation 15 years ago, the Environmental Research Unit has been equipped with various modern equipment and international facilities in order to implement what is required to carry out the tasks entrusted to the unit. A number of professors took turns to manage the unit, where the management of the unit was taken over by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abdulaziz Qadir, and then the management was transferred to Prof. Dr. Awaz Behrouz Muhammad to 16/10/2016, and then the administration moved to Prof. Dr. Omar Sabah Ibrahim on 17/10/2016 to 29/8/2019. After this date and until the preparation of this profile, Dr. Abdul Amir Hussein Qasim took over the management of the unit.

According to the directives of the President of the University of Kirkuk, Prof. Dr. Sabah Ahmed Ismail, and the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Assistant Professor Nima Ali Ahmed, great emphasis was placed on operating laboratory equipment, which remained unoperated for many years, knowing that it cost the state large sums. After the successful operation of these devices and the exceptional efforts of the director of the unit and its cadres, the unit became able to achieve its set objectives in a way that serves the environmental reality of Kirkuk Governorate.
