Under the patronage of the President of Kirkuk University, Prof. Dr. Imran Jamal Hassan, and the supervision of the Dean of the College of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Jalnak Akram Omar, and in cooperation with the security and health authorities concerned with combating addiction and health awareness. The College of Engineering at Kirkuk University organized today a scientific awareness seminar on the phenomena of drug abuse and suicide, as part of efforts to spread awareness among students and society about the health and social risks associated with these negative phenomena.
The seminar was delivered by a delegation from Kirkuk Operations Command, Community Police and Anti-Narcotics, where they gave detailed lectures on the effects of drugs and suicide on society and ways to combat them.
The seminar aimed to shed light on the causes of the spread of drugs among young people, their health, psychological and social effects, in addition to explaining the legal consequences of their abuse and trafficking. It also addressed the problem of suicide, its psychological and social causes, and ways to prevent it, with a focus on the importance of psychological support and family awareness in reducing the spread of these dangerous phenomena. The symposium included scientific lectures presented by specialists from the community police and Kirkuk Operations Command, where they reviewed the types of drugs prevalent in society, their promotion methods, their impact on public health, and methods of prevention, in addition to analyzing the psychological and social factors that may push individuals to addiction or contemplate suicide. The legal aspects related to these issues were also addressed, with an explanation of the penalties imposed by Iraqi law on users and promoters, and the importance of the role of legal and security institutions in reducing the spread of drugs.
The symposium also witnessed the presentation of a group of awareness posters and illustrative models that highlight the health and economic damages of drugs and smoking, and a questionnaire was conducted on how to deal with psychological pressures in positive ways away from addiction and suicide.
At the end of the symposium, the participants came out with a number of recommendations, most notably:
• The need to intensify awareness efforts in universities and schools about the dangers of drugs and suicide.
• Strengthening the role of the family in monitoring children and guiding them towards a healthy and safe environment.
• The importance of providing specialized centers for psychological treatment and rehabilitation of addicts.
• Encouraging young people to engage in sports and cultural activities that contribute to building a balanced personality away from psychological and social risks. The security agencies participating in the symposium confirmed their commitment to supporting cooperation with educational and community institutions, in order to raise awareness among young people, and limit the spread of negative phenomena that threaten their future and the future of society.
