English Department

English Department: an overview

The English department was initiated in the academic year (2002-2003) along with the initiation of the College of Education with the aim of preparing teaching cadres of English for secondary Schools. Eleven batches have graduated from the department, morning studies since (2005-2006). In the academic year (2003-2004), evening studies were initiated, the first batch of which graduated in (2006-2007), then the study was suspended by the University. Later in (2012-2013) the evening studies were reopened. The number of the teaching staff in the English department is (12), the number of students (boys and girls) in the morning studies is (631), and there are (446) students (boys and girls) in the evening studies.

Objectives

1- Preparing graduates who are qualified scientifically, vocationalliy and personally in English language teaching.

2- Acquainting students with language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing).

3- Being in line with the scientific, academic, and technical developments, and providing students with a comprehensive knowledge of the English language and arts.

4- Carrying out theoretical, experimental, and comparative papers in the fields of English language and arts, and consolidating critical thinking skills of student.

5- Presenting aid to state intuitions in public and private sectors by making the needed translation.

6- Encouraging contact with English department students in countries where English is a mother tongue.

7- Encouraging the department's teachers to consolidate cooperative scientific and research work with equivalent scientific institutions inside and outside Iraq.

8- The staff's participation in enhancing the scientific standard of the teachers and students so that Iraq would be in the list of the top global list of scientific research by publishing their papors periodicals, besides participating in scientific global courses and symposiums in the realm of academic research.  

9- Putting teaching and educational plans into action in order to attain the needed precision of academic dependence. 

10- Training students to use modern technology and distance learning or in moder teaching methods, like films and video tapes, language lab, to accopany modern technological developments. 

 Serving community by continuing teaching by organizing training courses, consultations, and scientific meetings in English language and arts
