Master’s Thesis Defense at the College of Arts on the Role of Orientalists in Documenting the History of the Arabian Gulf

A scientific discussion was held in the Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Kirkuk, for the master's thesis entitled “The Role of Orientalists in Documenting the History of the Arabian Gulf: J.G. Lorimer as a Model” by the student Asmaa Yousif Ibrahim.

The thesis explored the most significant travels and Orientalists who visited the Gulf region, with a focus on John Gordon Lorimer and his writings, including the Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf, which is considered a key source for studying the political, economic, and social history of the Arabian Gulf.

The thesis concluded that Orientalist studies and writings represent valuable historical material and are essential sources for studying the history of the region. It also found that Lorimer’s connection to the British investment project in the East played a role in his interest in and authorship about the region. His encyclopedic work, Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf, is regarded as a comprehensive and reliable record of the Arabian Gulf’s history.

The thesis was approved with a rating of "Pass".
