On Thursday, July 25, 2024, in the hall of the College of Arts at the University of Kirkuk, a master's thesis discussion took place for student Rusul Ibrahim Mahmoud Yousif from the Department of History. The thesis was titled "The Lausanne Conference (1922-1923): A Historical Study."
The discussion was attended by Professor Omar Najm Al-Deen Enja, Dean of the College of Arts, his scientific and administrative deputies, and a number of faculty members.
The discussion committee reached the following conclusions:
1. The thesis examined the political developments that led to the Lausanne Conference of 1922-1923, particularly the emergence of the resistance movement led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, which forced the Allied Powers to reconsider their policies regarding treaties signed with the Istanbul government, including the Treaty of Sevres.
2. The Lausanne Conference proceeded in two phases: the first phase from November 1922 to February 1923, during which border issues, the straits, and the Mosul issue were discussed; and the second phase from February to July 1923, during which economic, financial, and the Ottoman public debt issues were addressed.
3. The conference negotiations resulted in the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne on July 24, 1923, in which European countries recognized the new regime in Turkey and laid the foundation for resolving all conflicts that had led to the Turkish War of Independence.
The recommendation was made to accept the thesis with a grade of "Satisfactory."
