On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the Dean of the College of Arts at the University of Kirkuk, Professor Dr. Omer Najm_Aldeen Enja, participated in the virtual international scientific symposium titled "Full Accessibility for Women with Disabilities: Comprehensive Empowerment in a Changing World." The event included the participation of professors and specialists from several countries, including Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria.
During the symposium, the Dean delivered a speech in which he emphasized that there is a gap in providing the necessary educational and pedagogical support for disabled women, resulting in a failure to harness their abilities or rehabilitate and integrate them into educational and pedagogical institutions.
He pointed out that this issue exists in Arab environments and may be a widespread cultural norm across Arab countries compared to Western nations, where disabled individuals are more commonly found working in government institutions and the private sector alongside able-bodied individuals.
The Dean highlighted that disability has become a constraint on women and a limitation of their abilities due to their impairment, noting that they need comprehensive services to ensure their rights. He stressed that disabled women should receive medical, psychological, and vocational support to help them achieve maximum functional effectiveness, develop their self-reliance, and become as productive as possible within society. The goal is to ensure their integration, preserve their societal membership, and prevent discrimination, exclusion, or marginalization.
Additionally, he noted that the Iraqi government enacted Law No. 38 of 2013, along with its amendments, which aim to care for individuals with special needs and integrate them into society, ensuring them a dignified life.
The Dean also emphasized the need to focus on women themselves, suggesting they should adopt a different perspective, viewing disability as a test from God and recognizing their role as valuable members of society.
