Discussion of a master’s thesis at the College of Engineering at Kirkuk University
On Sunday, February 11, 2024, the College of Engineering witnessed a scientific discussion in the Civil Engineering Department at the College of Engineering at Kirkuk University for the master’s thesis titled:
(Residual resistance of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP bars after exposure to high temperatures).
By the researcher (Ali Najm Abdullah) and under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Muayyad Muhammad Qasim
This thesis dealt with the experimental analysis to evaluate the effect of high temperatures on the load resistance of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP reinforced polymer bars.
24 thresholds were cast in three different concrete mixtures with normal and high concrete compressive strength (39, 46, 55) MPa, and cross-sectional dimensions of 120 mm width, 200 mm height, and 1600 mm length.
The purpose of the research was to study the effect of increasing temperature and exposure time on concrete beams with different compressive strengths.
The results obtained through experiments concluded that increasing the exposure time and temperature leads to a significant decrease in the residual load capacity and precipitation. However, increasing the compressive strength of the concrete had a positive effect on the residual strength capacity.
Compressive failure is the most common failure mechanism in all GFRP beams analyzed before and after increased temperature exposure, according to experimental test results. The failure mode changes from compression to equilibrium or tension with increasing temperature and exposure time, which is considered an unsafe failure and does not give warning signs.
The discussion committee consisted of:
1- Assistant Professor Dr. Ghazwan Abdel Samad Salman / Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research / Chairman
2- Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Ihsan Salah al-Din / University of Kirkuk / Member
3- Dr. Khamis Nayef Abdel Halim / University of Kirkuk / Member
4- Professor Dr. Muayyad Muhammad Qasim / University of Kirkuk / member and supervisor
